The Hair and Beauty industry is an ever-evolving sector that thrives on creativity, technical expertise, and hands-on experience. Apprenticeships play a crucial role in preparing future professionals by providing a combination of practical training and theoretical knowledge. As the industry grows, the demand for skilled individuals continues to rise, making apprenticeships an invaluable pathway for aspiring hairdressers, beauty therapists and aestheticians.

1. Hands-On Learning and Real-World Experience

Unlike traditional education routes, apprenticeships immerse students in a real-world salon or spa environment from day one. This hands-on training allows apprentices to develop their technical skills, from mastering haircutting techniques to learning advanced beauty treatments, all under the guidance of experienced mentors.

Employers embrace apprentices in their salons and benefit from a more productive workplace as a result.

While classroom learning and practice with models have their own advantages, there is nothing quite like working in a client environment and learning from those around you!

“Since finishing my apprenticeship I have gained further salon experience and have now started working for myself! I’m now running my own salon from home and am fully booked 2-3 weeks in advance! My apprenticeship experience was amazing! I enjoyed every moment. Everyone is so helpful and helped me learn so much!”

2. Earning While Learning

One of the key benefits of apprenticeships is that learners can earn a salary while gaining essential industry skills. This makes the pathway more accessible to those who may not be able to afford full-time education while ensuring that apprentices develop a strong work ethic and financial independence early in their careers.

Currently, the Apprentice minimum wage is £6.40 per hour – however your employer may pay you more. As part of your apprenticeship you will be required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week in your salon.

3. Industry-Recognised Qualifications

Our Apprenticeship programs lead to nationally and internationally recognised qualifications, making graduates highly employable. Many salons, spas, and beauty clinics prefer hiring individuals who have undergone apprenticeship training due to their practical expertise and readiness for the industry.

4. Mentorship and Professional Development

Working alongside experienced professionals provides apprentices with mentorship opportunities that go beyond technical skills. They gain insights into client relations, time management, and business operations, which are essential for building a successful career in the hair and beauty industry.

Sophie studied Level 2 & 3 Beauty with Omni. Here’s what she had to say during her course…

“I’m so pleased I decided to do an apprenticeship at Omni. My tutor is so helpful and my work placement have supported and encouraged me to do my best. After just a few months I had my own client day at work performing the treatments I have learnt at Omni. I absolutely love what I’m doing and recommend it to anyone that is interested in Hair or Beauty!”

5. Keeping Up with Trends and Innovations

The beauty industry is constantly evolving with new trends, technologies, and techniques. Apprenticeships expose learners to the latest innovations, from sustainable beauty practices to advanced aesthetic treatments, ensuring they stay ahead of industry developments.

6. Pathway to Career Progression

Completing an apprenticeship opens multiple career opportunities. Graduates can choose to work in established salons, become freelance professionals, or even start their own businesses. Additionally, apprenticeships often lead to further specialisations and higher-level qualifications, enhancing career growth.

One local salon, Sparkle with Beauty, has worked with Omni for many years now, supporting apprentices through their programmes. Since they have begun working with us 3 of those apprentices ended up in senior positions within the business!

7. Boosting Confidence and Client Interaction Skills

Engaging directly with clients helps apprentices build communication and customer service skills. Apprentices learn how to consult with clients, recommend suitable treatments, and create positive experiences—an essential aspect of success in the beauty industry.

Throughout the apprenticeship, regular progress reviews take place when the apprentice, their employer and Omni have an open conversation about how the apprentice is progressing. During this conversation, there is almost always comments from employers, tutors and apprentices reflecting upon how their confidence has grown with both the treatments they’re delivering and how they communicate with clients. This in turn has a fantastic impact on their overall self confidence.

Conclusion

Apprenticeships are a cornerstone in shaping the future of hair and beauty professionals, offering hands-on experience, financial stability, and career development. By blending practical training with industry knowledge, apprenticeships ensure that the next generation of stylists and beauty therapists are equipped with the skills, confidence, and expertise to thrive in this dynamic field. For anyone considering a career in hair and beauty, an apprenticeship is a rewarding and valuable path to success.
